1 The first part of the page keeley probe can be use as a pre- lab activity, then following the M&M lab come back to it and give the students an opportunity to change any answers before having the group write an individual answer to the 2nd part of the page keeley. Follow with the students picking the best of the explanation to share with the class.

D R Y M I X Dependent vs Independent What is an independent variable? What is a dependent variable? Briefly review independent/dependent/control. Introduce DRY MIX. Discuss differences & similarities.

Independent variable It is the variable that you (the scientist) CONTROL/DECIDE It does not depend on anything else in the experiment Example: you want to measure how much a plant grows in one week depending on what type of liquid it receives. You control/decide the types of liquid Dependent variable It is the variable you MEASURE It depends on the independent variable As the independent variable changes, the dependent variable changes in response Example: the dependent variable in the example above is the height of the plant Introduce the DRY MIX acronym. Have students recite the acronym & it’s meanings with their elbow partner then write it on their lab.

Easy way to remember what is what: DRY MIX D = Dependent R = Responding Y = Y-axis M = Manipulated I = Independent X = X-axis Introduce the DRY MIX acronym. Have students recite the acronym & it’s meanings with their elbow partner then write it on their lab.

It should look something like “I predict that there will be enough evidence to dispute the claim of distribution by mass.” or “I predict that there will not be enough evidence to dispute the claim of distribution by mass.”
