1 LTSS Lesson 9 As one goes up….
Title Page

2 What is the relationship? Can you think of other situations like this?
Saying what you see. What has Sahir noticed? What are the variables? What is the relationship? Can you think of other situations like this? One work sheet per group of three plus one sketch graph piece of paper with the axes drawn are set out on the tables so that the learners can begin when they arrive. The discussion should link back to last lesson.

3 Your task today To think about the relationship between the thickness of a branch and it’s height from the ground.

4 Branching Out Activity 1. Groups of 3 maximum. Demonstrate measuring the circumference of a sample branch with a tape measure. A student in each group draws a two column table with the headings Variables and Values to record their answers. Provide another sheet of graph paper.

5 Activity 2: Same groups of 3 maximum and another sheet of graph paper
Activity 2: Same groups of 3 maximum and another sheet of graph paper. Sketch the three graphs on the same piece of graph paper. Describe the relationships in terms of similarities and differences.

6 Look at this tree. Saying what you see
What is the best way to describe what you have been thinking about today?

7 Thinking about inverse proportion
Before you look at the work cards think about the best way to explain this type of relationships. Look at the different work cards. Pick one and discuss what patterns you can find in the data. Try to imagine what the graph will look like before you sketch it.

8 Activity 2: Same groups of 3 maximum and another sheet of graph paper
Activity 2: Same groups of 3 maximum and another sheet of graph paper. Answer the questions.

9 Thinking about inverse proportion
You are going to see 3 pictures for 10 seconds. Can you spot the key ideas: V, V, R? Pick one you want to talk about. You could start by saying: ‘As the ……… goes ….. the ……. goes …….’ Revisit the hook. Pass out the 3 simples scenarios to encourage bridging to other everyday examples. What shape of graph would the describe the relationship?
