4 Introduction What is OIE?-An international and intergovernmental organisation with 169 members. Main missions: Animal disease information, control of animal diseases, facilitation of safe trade of livestock and livestock products. Other missions: Animal welfare and Food safety

5 Participation in STDF activities
Partner agency since its creation Projects managed: STDF 14 - Development of PVS tool, STDF 15 - Train the trainer’s programme STDF 13 - Enhancement of capacity in meeting SPS standards.

6 The OIE as a standards setting body
Recognised by WTO Standards in: international trade of animals and animal products Animal diseases including zoonoes Aim is to facilitate trade while minimising risks of pathogens entry Impact of animal diseases on trade: market access How does OIE help countries?

8 Aim of the OIE Codes and Manuals
Codes: to assure the sanitary safety of the international trade in… …terrestrial animals (mammals, birds and bees)   Terrestrial Animal Health Code … aquatic animals (fish, molluscs and crustaceans) and their products  Aquatic Animal Health Code Diagnostic Manuals: To provide standards for diagnostic tests and vaccines for the diseases listed in the Codes

9 OIE PVS tool

10 OIE PVS Tool A tool developed by OIE in collaboration with IICA to evaluate Veterinary Services (VS) of developing and in transition countries on a purely voluntary basis. Basic document accessible on

11 OIE PVS Tool (cont) Aim is to assess compliance of VS with OIE standards on quality of VS, identify deficiencies in VS and priority investments likely to be funded by national and or external resources. Experts from all 5 regions trained and certified by OIE and list endorsed by international donors.

12 Implementation Following official request from a Member Country (MC), OIE proposes for acceptance by MC, a list of experts (2-3) and dates of assessment. All costs borne by the OIE (except local travels expenses). Confidential report received at OIE is peer reviewed and sent to MC for comments/approval.

Report only published with consent of MC. OIE assists MC on request to seek international aid for investment programmes.
