Approach to develop the emotional factor
Anger

Approach to develop Emotional Factor
Emotional Factor – anger Approach - self talk Self talk is used to improve the ability to control and challenge aggression in a positive way. It also reduces your frustration levels or increases your frustration tolerance 3Rs – recognise regroup refocus

3 R’s Recognise the common triggers that leads to loss of control and aggressive acts eg playing against certain people or teams can affect your performance in a negative way eg local derby fixtures When this happens the player should apply strategies such as repeating key words or phases to counteract negative behaviour Anger Describe a situation where as a sports competitor you have been overcome with anger

3 R’s Regroup – able to stop and think about the possible consequences of reacting or losing control or showing aggression eg a time out in basketball half time in football Having time to think may allow the player to calm down and engage in self talk

3 R’s Refocus – concentrate on the bigger picture or more important issues in the game. This is important both for the individual and how the team functions . This should lead to a more productive and positive outcome

3 R’s By refocusing players are able prepare thoroughly by imagining all different scenarios Example – receiving a bad pass or a bad tackle is made and rather than looking to blame some one you should regroup by stopping and thinking and aiming to remain positive .Refocus by supporting the team and looking for solutions

Question Explain an approach you could use to improve your levels of anger

Plan Introduce that anger is an emotional factor that has a negative impact on performance Introduce the method you will use to lower your levels of anger (self talk) Explain exactly what you will do and why (3 R’s) Highlight the impact this has on performance

Example I used an interval training approach. {This was relevant as it allowed us to break the drill into a work: rest ration. This allowed us to have a rest between runs. This helped further develop performance as we were able to try our hardest each time we went, due to the rest which allowed us to maintain our heart rates in the training zone which is a recognised way to improve CVE.} /Another relevant point was being able to set targets in the form of a set time to beat each time we ran. This helped further develop performance as we were determined and trying hard to beat this time so this kept our heart rate high enough to help CVE. The time was easily adapted to increase our workload. We were constantly motivated even if we were improving.
