The Peloponnesian War and the Rise of Macedonia
Sparta defeated Athens in the Peloponnesian war. King Phillip II united the Macedonian tribes and went on to conquer all of Greece. Never again would a Greek city-state become a great power.

Most Macedonians were farmers, but the rulers were Greek and admired that culture Philip did not like the weaknesses of the Greek government He wanted to unify the city-states and spread Greek culture

Goes on to conquer Persian Empire. Very clever strategy Inherited a great deal of territory

LOVED the Greek culture Spread Greek ideas and knowledge throughout empire. Founded many cities. Ex: Alexandria in Egypt.

How Alexander used religion
Showed respect for different religions Ex: traditions and customs Visited an oracle in Egypt, who said he was a living god People believed this

Alexander adopts the ways of conquered cultures
Respected the cultural practices of conquered people Borrowed Persian customs Ex: wearing Persian clothing Encouraged marriage between the people of Macedonia and Persia. This made some of his comrades upset.

Alexander died around the age of The cause of his death is still a mystery. His generals divided his empire.
