4 The United Nations

5 The Beginning The UN is an international organization
Began in 1945 after World War II (WWII) with 51 member countries Currently consists of 193 participating countries

6 Purpose Maintain international peace and security
Facilitate international diplomacy and communication Propose innovative solutions to world issues about human rights, living standard, and social development Vocabulary: Diplomacy— “the work of maintaining good relations between the governments of different countries”

7 Important The UN is NOT a government—it does not make laws
However it gives nations the opportunity to come together and discuss vital issues

8 The Emblem and Flag World map centered on the North Pole
Olive branches represent peace

9 Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the UN

10 Millennium Development Goals

11 Group Activity What do you think are some problems currently facing the world? Which do you consider to be the most critical? Group activity: in groups of 2-4 students create a list of vital world issues that you know of. Which do you consider to be the most important? --On the board make a list of all the issues that they students come up with. These will be later compared to the MDGs. Left off here with the 3A ESO—they have a list of the problems that they think currently exist in the world. (9/23)

12 Millennium Development Goals
In 2000 the eight Millennium Development Goals were established aiming to eradiate extreme poverty The target deadline was set as September 2015.

13 Some Startling Statistics
More than 99 million children worldwide are malnourished and underweight. 1/10 children of primary school age do not attend school Women have fewer job and government involvement opportunities than men. “6.3 million children under five died from mostly preventable causes” Only ~50% of women in developing countries get the recommended amount of health care during pregnancy. Every hour 50 women are infected with HIV In 2012, malaria killed over 600,000 people. 2.5 billion people (nearly 1/3 of the world population) does not have adequate access to sanitation. Focus of aid money has shifted away from the poorest countries.

14 Here’s what those numbers look like

15 The Millennium Development Goals

16 Wait a minute… The goals were set to be accomplished by September 2015
…..What’s the date today?

17 Homework Research the new set of goals decided upon by the members of the United Nations. What are they called? What are the goals? What is new deadline?

18 The video is about the National Model UN conference…emphasize that not everyone will make it to NYC, but need to focus on what the students are learning and the idea of participating on the small scale or the larger scale in the global citizenship.
