5 Girls’ protection strategies: assets
What are assets and why build them? Theory of change posits that girls’ vulnerabilities will be reduced by acquiring social assets (friends, self esteem, mentors), health assets (knowledge of health issues, access to health services), economic assets (financial planning skills, savings), and educational assets (literacy, formal schooling). Girls can draw on these assets to reduce vulnerabilities and expand their opportunities. How does that work? For example, if a girl has her own money and a financial education (economic assets), she can avoid having to engage in risky sex for money. If she has a strong network of friends and good negotiation/communication skills, she can avoid being in a relationship that involves GBV. If she has SRH knowledge and access to family planning (health assets), she can reduce her risk of acquiring HIV and avoid an unwanted pregnancy.
