THE CARE AND FEEDING OF VOLUNTEERS
OR HOW TO KEEP THEM COMING 1
2
INTRODUCTION The success of Knights of Columbus Councils depends upon volunteers. All knights at the council level are volunteers with the success of council programs and goals dependent on them. 2

TIPS FOR ATTRACTING NEW MEMBERS AND RETAINING PRESENT MEMBER VOLUNTEERS

4
1. INVOLVEMENT New members indicate their interest areas and are assigned to programs in those areas. Program chairmen invite new and senior members to work on activities, not always calling on the same people. 4
5
INVOLVEMENT Cont. Use program sign-up sheets at meetings or computer sign-up programs where members can select their job on projects. Participate in parish and community events so others see what the knights do. Invite members to suggest new projects and seriously discuss them. 5
6
2. PROVIDE TRAINING When conducting council officer elections, describe the duties of each office prior to nominations. Project chairmen should have a co- chairman who can assist and learn from them. All members are invited to attend state and diocesan meetings to learn more about the Knights of Columbus and their programs. 6
7
PROVIDE TRAINING Cont. When asking members to be a service program director, tell them what the position entails. Tell members what to expect before they volunteer to work on an activity. Ask members working on a project if they'd like to exchange places with another member. 7
8
PROVIDE TRAINING Cont. Approach members to assume more or different responsibilities in the council when they appear ready. 8

3. RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION
Recognize Knights and Families of the Months. Hold appreciation programs and award plaques and certificates to members for their contributions. Let members know through publications and verbal commendations that their time commitment is appreciated and they make a difference. 9
10
RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION Cont.
Publicize those individuals and groups that deserve recognition in council, parish and community publications. Make new members feel welcome by introducing them at meetings. Publicize the Shining Armor Award criteria and recognize members who earn it. 10
11
4. MAKE WORK FUN Socialize and perhaps have a beverage after working on projects. Have meals or snacks after council meetings. Leaders display appropriate humor working on projects with volunteers. 11
