Communication Animals communicate for protection, locating other members of their groups, warning others of danger, and finding mates They use sounds, lights, chemicals, and body language Communicate with those in same species and with different species

Communication - sound Different sounds are used for different things – excitement, play, warning of danger, attract mates, etc. Write down when this plays what you think is the animal making that noise.

Communication - light Bioluminescence – the ability of certain living things to give off light Chemical reactions in the animal’s body produce the light Why do you think most animals that use bioluminescence live in the ocean?

Pheromone – a chemical that is produced by 1 animal and influences the behavior of another animal of the same species Signals the presence of danger, food, mates, or even communicates the borders of a territory

Communicates excitement, aggression, and other moods by facial expressions Can make it easier for an animal to communicate with other members of its species or other species

Society – a group of animals of the same species living and working together in an organized way Sometimes highly structured with specific roles for members Sometimes less highly structured with members doing multiple roles Sometimes only come together for breeding or migration

Territory – an area set up by animals for feeding, mating, and raising you Identified by noises, physical changes, or marking the area Aggression – a forceful behavior used to dominate or control another animal When fight same species usually not trying to cause serious harm
