Blood From the beginning of man’s fall, blood has been shed (Genesis 3:21) Israel was called upon to offer sin offerings throughout their history But the blood of bulls and goats could not ultimately remove sins (Hebrews 10:4) We are here because Jesus shed His blood

What the Blood of Jesus Does

His blood cleanses us

His blood cleanses us When do we need to be cleansed? Spiritually, sin makes us unclean (Isaiah 64:6, cf. Matthew 15:18-20) To be in God’s presence, we need to be cleansed Psalm 51:2, Isaiah 1:18

His blood cleanses us Revelation 1:5, His blood washes us from our sins Hebrews 9:13-14 1 John 1:7, as Christians, when we walk in the light, His blood cleanses us Purification – Hebrews 9:22-23, 24-28, Titus 2:14

His blood reconciles us to God

His blood reconciles us
Sin separates us from God - Isaiah 59:2, Enmity – cf. James 4:4, Romans 8:6-8ff Reconciliation is bringing together those who have become enemies or damaged their relationship Hebrews 10:31 – we do not want to be enemies with God!

His blood reconciles us
Reconciled through the death of His Son – Romans 5:10-11 Colossians 1:19-22, we were alienated, but now reconciled 2 Corinthians 5:18-21, God has reconciled us to Himself through His Son… we have the “word of reconciliation”

His blood redeems us

His blood redeems us Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin – John 8:34 Romans 6:16, 23 are you a slave of sin (unrighteousness)? The wages of sin is death! Redemption – to release or set free. Often associated with paying for that freedom, or a ransom

His blood redeems us Jesus redeemed us through His blood – Ephesians 1:7 Colossians 1:13-14 redemption and forgiveness 1 Peter 1:18-19, with the precious blood of Jesus Titus 2:13-14, 1 Timothy 2:5-6 (a ransom), Romans 3:23-25

His blood justifies us

His blood justifies us A legal term meaning to be made right or declared right (not guilty) Romans 3:23, 6:23 we are guilty and worthy of death God’s justice demands that a price be paid for our sins

His blood justifies us Jesus paid that price Romans 3:23-25, “propitiation” means to appease God’s wrath On the cross, Jesus paid the price for our sins – 2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Peter 2:23-25, Romans 5:9, 1 Peter 3:18

His blood sanctifies us

His blood sanctifies us
Sanctified means to be set apart (e.g. holy, saint). We are “set apart ones” Hebrews 13:12, Jesus, that He might sanctify the people suffered outside the gate Hebrews 10:10, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ…

His blood sanctifies us
Here we find what God does TO us – setting us apart 1 Peter 2:4-5, 9 a holy priesthood, His own special people, a chosen generation, etc. Hebrews 12:14, pursue “holiness” without which no one will see the Lord John 17:17, sanctified by truth

His blood purchased the church

His blood purchased the church
Acts 20:28 He created the body of the saved Ephesians 5:25-27, He gave Himself for her to purify her Acts 2:47, we are added to her when saved 1 Corinthians 12:13, we are baptized into this body

Baptism and the blood of Jesus

Baptism and His blood What does baptism do for us! Acts 2:38, baptized and immersed “for the remission of sins” (forgiveness) Romans 6:3-6, it is in baptism that we come in contact with His death (and blood) Mark 16:16, 1 Peter 3:20-21

Baptism and His blood Consider His blood Acts 22:16, we are cleansed (“wash away your sins”) Romans 6:6, we are redeemed, no longer slaves of sin (freed) Titus 3:4-7, we are justified through “the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit”

What has the blood of Jesus done for you?
