1 French and Indian War Unit 1 APUSH

2 The Albany Congress (1754) Called together: Wanted to:
Four Competing Groups: English Board of Trade and Privy Council: Colonial Proposal: Called together by the British Wanted to: bolster support for the allies against the French Competing for the Ohio Valley Virginia, Pennsylvania, France, Iroquois and the Indians who actually lived there were all competing for the Ohio valley. English Board of Trade and Privy Council set up a meeting with the Iroquois in Albany. Colonies sent representatives to the meeting. Colonies proposed creating a colonial confederacy. Confederation was vetoed but set precedent for later colonial unity. Iroquois were not impressed with the British efforts and were mostly impressed by the French’s military mite (They built forts and had many weapons.)

4 The Start of the F&I War First attack: British response:
Colonies divided: 1. First Attack: Washington (21 yrs.) attempted to take Ohio Valley. Wanted to take Ohio Valley for Virginia from the French but failed. The French were too strong and defeated Washington’s force. 2. British sent Braddock in with troops Virginia called Britain for help They sent in troops led by Braddock. Attacked and killed including Braddock. 3. Colonies are extremely divided and unable to put together a cohesive force initially. Most are worried about loosing control and autonomy.

5 The F&I War Declared 1756 – War Declared
Initially, English defeated by the French Two major changes turned the tied of the war: 1. Britain declared war on the French Britain gained support from the Prussians and decided to declare war on France. War took place in Europe (7 year’s war) and in the America’s (French and Indian War). 3. Two Major Changes turned tied of the war Iroquois abandoned support of the British. Iroquois were concerned that the French were gaining too much power and would turn against them. The lack of support allowed the British to capture French forts that they had been unsuccessful at doing earlier. b) William Pitt took control of the British military affairs Reinvigorated British enthusiasm & patriotism Promised colonies that if they raised enough men to fight, Parliament would cover most of the cost.

6 Treaty of Paris (Peace of Paris)
Ended the war Stated the following: 2. Stated the following: Officially ended the war. France gave Britain all of its lands east of the Mississippi. France left the continent of N. America except for a few settlements in Canada. Spain gave Florida to Britain in exchange for Cuba.

7 Impact of the War: British & N.A.’s
On the British: Generated Resentment On the Indians: On the British: 1. War generated resentment by the English towards the colonists. Not happy with the military & financial help they received during the war. Believed central authority over colonies should be the English government rather than colonial governments. On the Indians of the Ohio Valley: Those Indians who allied themselves with the French became a prime enemy of the British. Iroquois Confederacy (allied with British) continued to contest English control of the Ohio Valley with no success.

8 Impact of the War: Colonists
On the Colonists: Colonists learned: Wanted to: Created Royal Proclamation: On the Colonists: Colonists learned to unite against a common foe Before war colonists distrusted one another. 2. Wanted to begin exploring the west now that the French were gone. b) British refused this. 3. Created Royal Proclamation stating that no one could settle west of the Allegheny mountains. c) Enforced law by putting together an army of 10,000 British troops paid for by taxes placed on the colonists.
