1.Scientists during the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment thinkers both applied observation and reason to their study of the world. 2. Like Renaissance humanists and Protestants during the Reformation, Enlightenment thinkers rejected authority and upheld the freedom of individuals to think for themselves. 3. They saw the laws of nature as evidence of an intelligent Creator and human progress as a sign of God’s goodness. Their approach to moral problems also reflected Christian values, such as respect for others and for a moral law.

Old Belief: New Idea: Christian faith was based largely on trust in the Bible as God’s word. Humans are perfectly able to discover truth for themselves. Ideas about right and wrong should be based on rational insight Ideas about right and wrong were based on religious teachings People have individual rights that government must respect. Kings had a divine right to rule
