1 Writing Settlement Teachers who were required to hand score writing assessments on or about November 2014 without compensation (monetary and/or adequate release time) shall be granted Compensatory Days Secondary teachers - two (2) Compensatory Days Elementary teachers - one (1) Compensatory Day K-8 teachers - aligned to their teaching assignment in Ex: Grade 8 Language Arts – two days; Grade 4 Language Arts – one day

2 Writing Settlement Compensatory Days must be taken in full day increments on any of the following days: October 3, 2016 October 12, 2016 November 23, 2016 January 23, 2017 March 24, 2017 June 9, 2017

3 Writing Settlement Principals must notify all elementary and secondary teachers who hand scored writing assessments on August 18 or 19, 2016 of the settlement. Principals must notify individual teachers of their Compensatory Days no later than September 2, Principals may utilize the notification letter included in Briefing #19708 or send an notification for record keeping purposes.

4 Writing Settlement If a teacher disputes the number of Compensatory Days they are granted, they must notify their current administrator and their Union Steward no later than September 16, Objections must contain specific reasons and evidence. If the administrator, steward, and teacher cannot agree on a resolution by September 23, 2016, the administrator will forward the dispute to the Office of Labor Relations, where it will be resolved no later than September 28, 2016.

5 Writing Settlement – Payroll Procedures
Compensatory Days must be utilized during the school year. Compensatory Days must be reported as Compensatory Time (SAP Absence Code 0284). These days must NOT be reported as OPT days. Principals must utilize the Compensatory Days Form attached to Briefing #19708 to record and monitor this process.

6 Writing Settlement – Payroll Procedures
For auditing purposes, principals must maintain a copy of briefing #19708 and the Compensatory Days Form with each payroll corresponding to the eligible Compensatory Days. For all Compensatory Days, the employee must complete an Application for Short Term Leave Form (Leave Card) that must also be maintained with the payroll records.
