1 Bell Ringer Part I Monday November 6th
You’ve just gotten off from work and are leaving your job at Burger King. As you come to a stop light, you notice a middle aged man standing on the median between the lanes of traffic. He’s carrying a sign that says “No work. Homeless. Please Help.” His clothes and shoes are torn. It is clear that this individual is suffering. The light turns red and you are stopped there, facing him. How do you handle the situation? Please write 2-3 sentences describing how you would handle this.

7 Meet Franklin Delano Roosevelt!
32nd President ( ) Democrat Had the Polio Disease and could not walk Americans were ready for a change after the failed attempts of Herbert Hoover to fix the Great Depression. FDR campaigned with the idea of a “New Deal” for the American people. You Tell Me: Why did Americans want a change from Hoover?

8 Eleanor Roosevelt FDR married his distant cousin Eleanor Roosevelt (she was Teddy’s niece) Eleanor played a big role in FDR’s government and in public affairs by giving speeches, radio addresses and writing newspaper columns about social conditions.

9 FDR and The New Deal His plan: The New Deal
Expanded the role of the federal government 3 goals: Relief, Recovery, Reform Different from Hoover because: Hoover believed depression relief should come from state and local governments and private agencies. FDR believed the depression required strong action and leadership by the federal government.

10 FDR’s Cabinet Even though FDR was a democrat, he still included some republicans in his cabinet He chose Frances Perkins, the first female cabinet member ever to be his Secretary of Labor.

11 100 days During the first 100 days in FDR’s Presidency, FDR proposed 15 bills. Wanted to provide relief from hardships of the depression, achieve long term economic recovery and put reforms in place that would prevent other depressions. Declared a bank holiday the day after his inauguration. Banks closed for 4 days so they could get their accounts in order before re-opening.

It invests your money… A comparatively small part of the money that you put into the bank is kept in currency – an amount which in normal times is wholly sufficient to cover the cash needs of the average citizen --- President Roosevelt

8 days after becoming President, he gave a fireside chat convincing the public that American banks were safe.

Listen up! Listen to FDR’s Speech “Overcoming Fear”. What words would you use to describe FDR’s tone during the fireside chat? Who do you think was listening to the radio address? What was FDR’s goal (or reason) for these chats? Why does FDR Say “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself?” Text Audio

15 Hoover vs. FDR Read the articles comparing Hoover’s view on government with FDR’s. You are encouraged to annotate and highlight as needed, although this is a class set so you will only submit your NB paper, not your annotations. On a sheet of notebook paper, please write: Your name at the top A 2-3 sentence summary of Hoover’s view on government A 2-3 sentence summary of FDR’s view on government A 2-3 sentence summary of who you agree with more and why At least TWO open-ended/thought provoking questions pertaining to the documents.

Who had the better approach to solving the problems of the Great Depression? Include at least three reasons to support your decision. This should be a 1 page response. You must use at least two quotes from the documents (be sure to cite them!). end of period.
