Focus Question: What were some different American perspectives on U.S. imperialism around the year 1900? Control by one country over another country’s territory, population and culture. Do Now: Try to remember: 1. From Global History – What does “imperialism” mean? 2. What does “manifest destiny” mean? What would it have to do with imperialism?

2 Early American Foreign Policies:
“foreign policy” = the goals, values, and strategies that guide how one nation deals or interacts with other nations. 1796 George Washington’s Farewell Address: GW said the U.S. should follow a policy of isolationism. Late 1800s Imperialism: The U.S. began to take over territories in the Caribbean and Pacific. 1823 The Monroe Doctrine: U.S. warned European nations to stay out of the Western Hemisphere.

3 “Uncle Sam Watches Over Cuba and the Philippines”
The Spanish-American War ended when Spain surrendered to the U.S. and sold Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the U.S. This political cartoon appeared in the conservative Judge magazine in 1902. Now will you be good? Uncle Sam (to Filipino) - “See what I do for a good little boy?”
