1 Let’s Think Secondary Science Lesson 3 – The G Word
Title Page

2 Introduction Entry activity. Also place a sheet on the tables for each group.

3 Relationships can be displayed as a picture called a Graph.
The G Word Relationships can be displayed as a picture called a Graph. Graphs usually have two axes. Do you know what they are? What graphs have you drawn before? You may want to do this as a “Think, pair and share activity.” Each group needs one blank graph sheet showing axes.

4 Coiled Spring As the … How many ways can you describe this relationship? What does the graph look like? Can you talk the line? The purpose is to produce a curve based upon the points not a perfect graph.

5 Washing up Liquid We are going to think what happens when heated washing up liquid is poured through the funnel. What are the variables? What do you predict the relationship will be? What will the graph look like? Insert a picture of your apparatus

6 Constructing Some Meaning
Look at the results. Can you predict the time for 400C? What were you thinking about as you did this? It is vital that the students debate what the shape of the graph will look like prior to sketching it.

7 Constructing Some Meaning
Watch the activity and use the results to sketch a graph of temperate against time. Compare both graphs – what do you notice? Why are they different? What is the shape telling you? Which graph will produce more accurate predictions? Why? It is vital that the students debate what the shape of the graph will look like prior to drawing it.

8 Review - More thinking What have you learnt from today’s lesson?
What are you thinking more about? Metacognition: What have you learnt from today’s lesson? Teacher to add their own additional questions to promote metacognition – see the mediating questions sheet.

9 What are you thinking more about?
Bridging What are you thinking more about? Bridging and further thinking at home
