3 A chemical name indicates the elements present in the compound
All ionic compounds are composed of positive(+) and negative(-) ions which can be described by using a name or formula Ex. Zinc nitride - Zn3N2 Sodium chloride – NaCl A chemical name indicates the elements present in the compound The chemical name of an ionic compound always has two parts - the metal 1st and then non-metal 2nd

Steps to naming Steps Ex: Magnesium and Bromine 1 2 3 Name the metal ion Magnesium Name the non-metal ion by ending the element name with “ide” bromine changes to bromide Write the name of the compound Magnesium bromide

5 Name the following Potassium and oxygen Lithium and nitrogen

Iron (III) Hydroxide Iron = Fe3+ Hydroxide = OH- Determine total charges Fe3+ OH- Note the ratio 1 Fe3+ for every 3 Use Subscripts and Brackets to write the formula. Omit brackets if only one ion is needed. Fe(OH)3
