3 Dechristianization Revolutionaries wanted to get rid of the Catholic Church b/c they saw it as a relic of feudalism The National Assembly seized and sold the lands owned by the church Streets that had the name “saint” in it were changed Changed the calendar to avoid days of worship and Christian holidays Catholics b/c enemies of the revolution

4 Maximilien Robespierre
Nickname – “The Incorruptible” – takes control of the revolution and b/c power hungry B/l in Rousseau’s social contract idea Leader of the Reign of Terror At the b/g of the revolution he was against the death penalty He changed his mind and decided that France could only obtain a “republic of virtue” through the use of terror

5 Reign of Terror 1793-1794 Led by Robespierre Jean-Paul Marat
Lasted about 1 year – 40,000 people guillotined Jean-Paul Marat Writes a radical journal where he points out enemies to the revolution Anyone pointed out was beheaded Stabbed to death by a woman who was against the revolution Ends with revolutionaries turning on Robespierre and sending him to the guillotine

6 Napoleon Bonaparte A popular and successful French general
1799 takes control of France and had himself named Emperor People loved him and allowed him to rule b/c he… Was a great war hero Made use of Enlightenment principles Brought peace and stability to France after the terrifying years of the French Revolution
