Exodus from Illinois Thousands of Mormons left Illinois and headed west, led by Brigham Young This group of settlers took time to prepare and educated themselves about their new home They left in winter because angry mobs threatened them with violence 3,000 Mormons made the first trek out west

Winter Quarters Moving along their trail during the Winter was cold and miserable They set up “Winter Quarters” a camp of log cabins in Nebraska They faced disease, cold, not enough food and warm clothes causing many to die

The Trek West The trail along the northern side of the Platte River came to be known as the Mormon Trail. The Oregon Trail ran along the southern side of the same river.

The Trek West The “Pioneer Company” (aka advance company) was made up of mostly men and was sent ahead of the rest of the group to clear trees, rocks, and write guides for others to follow Pioneers built log rafts to get their wagons across the rivers They walked nearly 1,000 miles through rough terrain
