3 Beginning in the 1800s, European nations became interested in the Middle East because of the large amount of oil reserves located there. = million barrels per day

4 Two areas of particular interest were Egypt and Palestine.

5 Both France and Britain were interested in controlling Egypt because it had a strategic location.

6 Suez Canal statistics: 120.11 miles long,
In 1859, France began building the Suez Canal in Egypt to increase trade between Europe and the Middle East. Suez Canal statistics: miles long, 79 feet deep, 673 feet wide

7 Britain eventually took control of the Suez Canal away from France in 1875 and took control of Egypt in 1882 (until 1956).

8 In 1920, Britain took control of Palestine because it had a strategic location.

9 Britain eventually gave up control of Palestine (in 1948) because conflicts between the people living in Palestine made the area too difficult to govern.
