Read page 410 on “The New Mexico Territory” Title is Santa Fe Trail. Write the question and answer on a sheet of paper. When Where Who Purpose Describe the physical characteristics of the trail. 1) Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) Ends the war with Mexico U.S. gains the Mexican Cession - territory of New Mexico, Arizona, & California for $15M Parts of present day states of CA, NV, UT, AZ, CO, NM, WY 2) Gadsden Purchase -U.S. paid Mexico $10 million Acquired land necessary for a southern transcontinental railroad 3) U.S. Territory extends from Atlantic to Pacific

The Compromise of 1850 1) CA is a Free State 2) NM Territory – No restriction on Slavery (popular sovereignty – Let the people decide) 3) NM-Texas border dispute in favor of NM 4) Slave trade, not slavery, abolished in D.C. (District of Columbia) 5) Stronger Fugitive Slave Laws Required all citizens to help catch runaway slaves Anyone who aided a fugitive could be fined or jailed
