4 Magna Carta “Magna Carta” means “The Great Charter.”
Famous document that forced King John of England to share power with the barons in the year 1215. Changed England’s government from an “Absolute Monarchy” to a “Limited Monarchy” because it placed limits on the king’s power. The Magna Carta sought to prevent the king from exploiting his power in arbitrary ways and it made clear that the king was subject to the law, not above it.
