1840s mountain men carved a number of passages such as Oregon trail People traveled these in covered wagons, known as over -landers, (Donner Party) Trip took 5 to 6 months Native Americans didn’t attack much & were often helpful They were worried about #s and gov’t negotiated Treaty of Fort Laramie, promised certain areas to NA

5 MORMON MIGRATION 1844 mob murdered J. Smith, Brigham Young took West in search of religious freedom creating the Mormon Trail. Stopped at Great Salt Lake
