3. The earth is always moving very slowly
The earth is always moving very slowly. The ground beneath your feet is slowly shifting a few centimeters per year
This happens due to plate tectonics:
A theory that describes earth’s surface as plates of rock sliding over a liquid-like substance

4. Earth’s Processes
Earth’s physical geography can change both slowly and very quickly.
Slow examples (thousands or millions of years): plate tectonics, wind, weatherization, and water/ice
Quick examples (within a day): catastrophic events volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunami, tornado

6. Plate Tectonics Convergent: plates move towards each other
Divergent: plates move away from each other
Transform: plates move side to side of each other

8. OCEANIC TRENCHES
Long and narrow depressions at the sea floor, along convergent plates.
Deepest place is by Guam, at 36,000 ft below the ocean surface, called Challenger Deep

Underwater mountain range, created by divergent plates.

11. Volcanoes
A mountain where lava from deep beneath the surface is reaching the surface
Formed from volcanic hotspots or along plate boundaries, especially convergent plates
Eruptions can be sudden, releasing massive mud slides, lava, and toxic gases

12. Earthquakes and Tsunamis
Sudden release of pressure built up between tectonic plates over thousands to millions of years
Usually associated with convergent and transform faults
When they happen underwater, they cause a tsunami
