1 Scientific Method Notes

2 What question are you trying to investigate?
* Highlight the Manipulated Variable (MV) & the Responding Variable (RV)

3 Find out as much as you can about the topic.
Research Find out as much as you can about the topic.

4 Hypothesis “If…then…because…” If…(state manipulated variable),
then…(state responding variable) because…(give prediction reason)

5 Materials Bulleted list
Tool to measure the Responding Variable (RV) –thermometer, stopwatch, etc. All materials, quantity, and mounts used are listed.

6 Procedures (experiment)
All relevant safety issues are describe. All materials used are listed. Procedures are well-organized and occurs in a step-by-step sequence (numbered list). Enough information is given so another person of the same ability could repeat the procedures. “Measure (__________) and record data” is written in the proper spot. Manipulated (MV), Responding (RV), and Controlled Variables (CV) are labeled.

7 Record Data (on a data table and graph)
Contains all data, including observations and measurements. All numbers have proper units of measure. All columns and rows are properly labeled. Average column is properly aligned. Label the Manipulated (MV) and Responding (RV) Variables Graph Scale of each axis increases in a set pattern. Title on both axis is present. If the data is present in a line graph then all the dots are connected. If it is a bar graph then each bar is distinctive. USE GRAPH PAPER!!!!

8 Conclusion How does your hypothesis relate to the claim learned from this investigation? Evidence of the claim is listed to support the conclusion (high and low data presented) Explain why the data helps answer the investigative question. Possible reasons for error are given (if any). Suggestions for improvement of this experiment and/or future experiments are given.

9 Variables Controlled Variable: something in the experiment that stays the same Manipulated Variable: something in the experiment that changes (there should only be 1) Responding Variable: the reaction between the controlled in the manipulated variables CV + MV = RV

10 Make a Foldable Your foldable needs to explain what each word means below and also draw a picture illustrating your definition. Investigative Question Research Hypothesis Materials Procedures Record Data Conclusion Variables
