2 Objectives: What am I learning?
How figurative language is used to illuminate the historical and cultural characteristics of a literary work. Why am I learning it? To understand how figurative language is used to produce the author’s purpose How will I know I learned it? I will have read a short story and completed an SAR Make an anchor chart

3 Quick Write: When you die what do you want your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered? (write at least one paragraph) Respond to quick write on the sheet of paper. Title your quick write.

*Writers include traits and characteristics of history and culture in their writing to make their work relevant and creditable.* Langston Hughes Bio Reflection Watch the video and respond to the following questions: When and where did the Harlem Renaissance occur? Why is this significant to that country’s history? How did Langston Hughes describe himself? How did others describe him? What legacy did Langston Hughes leave? Make an anchor chart

Historical or Cultural Setting – The significant history or culture that is embedded within the text Simile – A comparison of two unlike things using like or as. Metaphor – A comparison of two unlike things Hyperbole – an intentional exaggeration for emphasis Personification – Giving human qualities to non-human things. Imagery- descriptive language that paints a mental picture Make an anchor chart

6 Historical Setting/Context
In works of narrative, especially fictional Includes the historical moment in time and geographic location in which a story takes place Helps initiate the main backdrop and mood for a story. The moods, attitudes, and conditions that existed in a certain time

7 The historical and cultural contexts can consist of a variety of factors.
Here are some things you could consider in placing a text in ‘context’: the life or biography of the poet other works that the poet has written the historical period in which that poem was written the place or event that gave rise to the poem the ways in which the language used in the poem reflects the period in which it was written the particular culture within which the poem was written the social background of the poet or the theme or setting of the poem

8 Important notes….. Imagery……… Author Purpose: To describe a moment in his childhood that had an impact on him for the rest of his life. Also, to highlight the difference in views between generations. Message: Pressure from adults on children can be detrimental.

Continue taking notes on your chosen book. Everyone should be occupied. An idle mind is Negativity’s workshop! Keep in mind: If I don’t see you working that leads me to believe that you are satisfied with your progress in this class and I should have no need to sympathize with your whining or requests when grades are due. You are responsible for you!
