1 Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic
Mrs. Harper Biology 9/18/17

2 August 17, 2015 Download notes Begin working on Do Now

3 Do Now 8/17/15 All living things are composed of what?
What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular organisms? List any information that you already know about cells.

4 What are some differences you see between these two cells?

5 Cell Facts The average human being is composed of over 50 Trillion individual cells!!! It would take as many as 50 cells to cover the area of a dot on the letter “i” WOW!!!

6 Principal # 1 The cell is the most basic unit of life.

7 Principal # 2 All organisms are made of one or more cells.
(Think- unicellular vs. multicellular)

8 Principal # 3 All cells are produced by pre-existing cells.

9 Types of Cells Prokaryotic Eukaryotic

10 What are organelles? A specialized part of a cell with a specific function  Mini “organs” of a cell.

11 All Cells… (Both Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic)
Are enclosed by a cell membrane. Are filled with cytoplasm. Have ribosomes Have DNA (genetic material) cell membrane Bacterium (colored SEM; magnification 8800x) cytoplasm

12 Eukaryotes Eukaryotic cells Have a nucleus Have organelles
Are larger in size More complex structure Multicellular nucleus organelles cell membrane cytoplasm

13 Prokaryotes Prokaryotic cells No nucleus No organelles Smaller in size
Simple structure Unicellular nucleus organelles cell membrane cytoplasm

14 One way to remember the difference
Eukaryote Eukaryote has true nucleus EU has TRUE Prokaryote Prokaryote has no nucleus PRO has NO

15 Prokaryotes Eukaryotes
Fill in the left and right parts of the diagram with your shoulder partner (must have 4 to 5 traits listed for each) Prokaryotes Eukaryotes

16 Prokaryotes Eukaryotes
No Nucleus No organelles Smaller in size Simple Unicellular organisms Cell Membrane Cytoplasm DNA Ribosomes Nucleus present Has organelles Bigger in size More complex Multicellular organisms

17 Assignment Work on handout independently We are on CODE RED
Unfinished classwork becomes homework

18 Extra Questions to Consider
1. Which characteristics do all prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have in common? A. cell wall B. nucleus C. cell membrane D. organelles 2. Which characteristic is NOT common to both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells? A. cytoplasm B. reproduction C. nucleus D. cell membrane 3. In general eukaryotic cells are… A. smaller than prokaryotic cells B. larger than prokaryotic cells C. about the same size D. visible to the unaided eye

19 Questions to Consider 4. Prokaryotic cells do NOT contain which of the following? A. ribsomes B. nucleus C. cytoplasm D. DNA 5. Which organelle is found in both cell types? A. nucleus B. cell wall C. ribosomes D. RNA
