Chapter 1, Unit C Sets and Venn Diagrams
2
Essential Question How do we organize relationships between categories?
3
Definitions Set: collection of objects, living, or nonliving.
Example: Set of math teachers at PCHS Members: specific objects within the set Example: Shinjo, Kaji, Miwa, RC, Kono, Murata, Yee, Takai, Adaniya, Sumstine, Nakamoto, Nguyen Set Notation: { } that lists the members separated by commas {Shinjo, Kaji, Miwa, RC, Kono, Murata, Yee, Takai, Adaniya, Sumstine, Nakamoto, Nguyen} Ellipses: “…” list continues as expected Ex: {Shinjo, Kaji, Miwa…Nakamoto, Nguyen}
4
Venn Diagram: SUBSET A is a subset of B (All A are B)
All members of A are also members of B Example 1: All dogs are animals Example 2: All bananas are fruit
5
Venn Diagram: DISJOINT
A is disjoint from B (No A are B) A has no members in common with B Example 1: Set of boys and girls Example 2: Set of fruits and vegetables
6
Venn Diagram: OVERLAPPING
A and B are overlapping (Some A are B) A and B share some of the same members Example 1: band students and athletes Example 2: Seniors and Algebra 2
7
Venn Diagram: Overlapping
A and B are overlapping (Some A are not B) A and B share some members Example 1: Some teachers are not men Example 2: Some dogs are not housedogs
8
Venn Diagrams: PRACTICE
Practice #1: All whales are mammals Practice #2: No fish are mammals Practice #3: Some women are doctors Practice #4: Some teachers are not men Practice #5: Women, Dentist, and Teachers Practice #6: All politicians are married Practice #7: If you’re from Hawaii, then you are tan
