Sabbath On a Sabbath Jesus is teaching in one of the synagogues. Sabbath = 7 th day = Saturday You have six days to work but the seventh day is a day of rest (Exodus 20) No work! Rest and prayer

Luke 13 And suddenly a woman who has a spirit of weakness for eighteen years and is bent over and cannot stand up straight. When Jesus sees her he calls her forward and says to her, Woman, you are set free from your weakness. He puts his hands on her and immediately she stands up straight and praises God. Greek astheneia = weakness? Brokenness? Jesus heals on the Sabbath!

What Jesus says Now here is this daughter of Abraham our ancestor and Satan has held her prisoner for eighteen years. Should she not be set free on the Sabbath? Jesus does not say she should be healed Greek apolyoo = loose from / set free Healing ~ being set free! Set free from what?

Sanity and health Creation – including us – broken because of sin Everyone is a little insane Latin insanus = not healthy Our thoughts Our emotions What we do What we do not do Hurt others and ourselves

Jesus the Great Physician Physician of our souls Learn about body Learn about disease and injury Passions = sicknesses and diseases of the soul Greek epithymia Passions infect / damage the soul

The Three Main Passions Pride – Do not need God – Thinking and knowledge Self-love – Only care about physical – Want and desire Vainglory – Please other people – Will and choice

Why talk about spiritual diseases? So that we can become healthy! God through Christ sets us free from these passions Pray – Five minutes Sabbath -> holy time – Rest and pray – God sets us free and heals us
