Appalachian Plateau

Appalachian Plateau: Isolated to a small piece of Georgia in the extreme northwestern corner of the state, the Appalachian Plateau stands about 1,800 to 2,000 feet above sea level and consists of narrow valleys and wooded ridges. Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain are found in this region. Located Lookout Mountain in the northwest corner of Georgia, Sand, Lookout, and Pigeon mountains belong to the geologic province known as the Appalachian, or Cumberland, Plateau. This plateau extends continuously from New York to Alabama and forms the western boundary of the Appalachian Mountains. The area has great economic significance because the vast Appalachian coalfield lies beneath it. Only a small segment of the plateau lies in Georgia, and yet this area is one of the most scenic in the state

Lookout Mountain stretches eighty-four miles from downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, to downtown Gadsden, Alabama. Only three miles of Lookout Mountain are located in Tennessee, while thirty-one miles lie in northwest Georgia and fifty miles extend into northeast Alabama. The mountain's highest point is located near the community of High Point, Georgia, along the eastern brow, where it reaches an elevation of 2,393 feet.

The precipitous drop-offs from the top of Lookout Mountain into the valleys also furnish an excellent site for hang-gliding and rock climbing.

Completed in 1836, Chattooga Academy is believed to be one of Georgia's oldest remaining brick school buildings and was later renamed John B. Gordon Hall after Confederate Gen. John B. Gordon, who attended the school as a child and also served as governor of Georgia.  Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg made the building his headquarters in September 1863.  Bragg sat under an oak tree in front of the school as he planned his attack on Union forces at Chickamauga.

The Marsh House was built by Spencer Stewart Marsh about 1836
The Marsh House was built by Spencer Stewart Marsh about In the mid-1830's, residents of the growing community wished to build a new building to replace the one-room log cabin which served as a school at that time. Mr. Marsh donated the land just south of his residence for the new school, originally called Chattooga Academy and later dedicated as John B. Gordon Hall. The Marsh home became the school-time residence of John B. Gordon who later served as a Confederate general and Georgia governor.

The Marsh house was built in 1836 by Spencer Stewart Marsh. Union troops occupied the house during the Civil War. When the family returned to its home after the war, the floors in the downstairs hall were marked with hoof prints and many bullets were found in the outer walls of the house.

Fort Oglethorpe's history is unique and fascinating, a drama of several wars set in the beauty of the North Georgia woods and streams. Fort Oglethorpe was a major military outpost during the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II

The noted Georgia folk artist Howard Finster was born on the western slopes of Lookout Mountain near the town of Valley Head, Alabama. Finster spent his adult life to the east of Lookout Mountain in the town of Pennville, Georgia, where he built Paradise Gardens, an outdoor display of his artwork.

Over the course of his lifetime, Howard Finster created more than 46,000 works of art (not even counting his earliest pieces, which were not numbered). At first, the paintings were labors of love, painstakingly detailed with a tiny brush. Around the late 1980s, Finster switched from using all paint to using a combination of paint and magic markers.
