1 Civil War Tim Egan 7-T

2 Introduction to Civil War
The War started in 1861 and ended in 1865. The war was fought between the North and South states of America. The North, or the Union, who wanted to end slavery. The South, or the Confederacy wanted to end slavery. The resolution of the war was that slavery in the United States of America was ended.

3 Major Causes of the War The biggest cause of the war was slavery. The North wanted to end it and the South wanted to keep it. The election of Abraham Lincoln was another reason. He was a Republican, and Republicans were against slavery.

4 Jefferson Davis Significant person from south.
President of Confederate States of America. Ordered the attack on Ft. Sumter, which started the war.

5 Ulysses S. Grant Significant person from North.
Commander of Union troops. Took over Vicksburg, key city on Mississippi River that ended the Civil War. Later became 18th president of the United States of America.

6 Battle of Gettysburg Turning point in the Civil War.
Union Major general George Gordon Meade lead his army to a victory over Robert E.Lee. Somewhere between 46,000 and 51,000American soldiers died in the three day battle. After the battle Lincoln gave what would be his most famous speech, the Gettysburg address.

7 Life on the Home Front Family’s were split apart.
Fathers and sons had to fight in the war. Daughters had to work in factories.

8 Final Resolution Robert Lee’s soldiers were tired, hungry, and ran away from his army. In the town of Appomattox Courthouse Lee surrendered to Grant. Grant did not punish or arrest any of the Union soldiers.

9 Major Effects of War Because of Lincoln’s political view on slavery he was assassinated. The South was destroyed, farms and towns would have to be rebuilt. The United States was in reconstruction.
