18 Math in the World of Work
Figuring Hours Worked Figure It Out   Today you arrive at work at 8:30 a.m. You take lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Then you worked from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. How many hours and minutes have you worked?

19 Answer to problem. Step 1  Calculate how long you worked before lunch. Subtract the earlier time (the time you got to work) from the later time (the time you left for lunch). Step 2  Calculate the time you worked after lunch. Step 3  Add the two times together. This gives you the answer to the question.

20 Steps Completed Before lunch -8:30 AM-12:30 PM=4hours
Lunch-12:30 PM-1:00 PM=30 min. (you do not add this to your time because they do not pay you for lunch). After lunch-1:00-5:30 PM=4hours and 30 min 4 hours + 4 hours and 30 min.=8 hours and 30 min. Do not add the 30 min. for lunch to the 8 hours and 30 min. So, you worked a total of 8 hours and 30 minutes.
