1 SPACE SPACE!!! SPACE

2 Just some Information! THESE ARE THE SMALLEST OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM:
**OUR MOON IS BIGGER THAN PLUTO, BUT SMALLER THAN MARS

3 UNIT 2 – SPACE EXPLORATION
Topic 1 – For our Eyes Only UNIT 2 – SPACE EXPLORATION

4 Introduction QUESTIONS:
When we look up at the sky, does the stars or sun or moon appear to be moving across the sky? All of these objects (moon, sun, stars) rise in the east and set in the west Are these objects moving or are we? What would the Earth, stars and sun be doing if we were standing on the moon looking at the sky?

5 Frame of Reference When we look up at the sky, our common sense tells us that Earth is not moving It seems that everything we see is moving around Earth When we do this, we are using Earth as our frame of reference.

6 Frames of Reference A frame of reference is a set of axes of any kind that is used to describe the positions or motions of things.

7 Frame of Reference -OR IN OTHER WORDS: FROM A CERTAIN VIEWPOINT
Position Examples: -Canada’s relationship to the Equator (we are north of the Equator) -Longitude and Latitude of a city -Okotoks is south of Calgary -The Earth is the third planet from the Sun -Student X is sitting in front of student Y -Student Y is sitting in front of student X -OR IN OTHER WORDS: FROM A CERTAIN VIEWPOINT

8 Example Let’s say we are riding on a bus travelling down deerfoot trail at 100km/hr. Does the road SEEM to be moving towards you or does it SEEM you are moving towards the road? It seems that the road is moving towards you. A person standing on the side of the road would have a different frame of reference… what do you think it would be?

9 A person standing on the side of a road would be at rest relative the road and would say that YOU and the bus were moving at 100km/hr relative to the ground. The person on the bus feels at rest relative to the bus so the road seems like it is coming towards them.

10 Whether you are on the bus or on the side of the road, both frames of reference are correct they are just different points of view.

11 MOTION EXAMPLES: **IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO MAKE A DRAWING FIRST, **THEN PUT YOURSELF IN THE POSITION OF FRAME OF REFERENCE TO HELP YOU FIGURE THE ANSWER OUT. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? You are sitting on a park bench. You see someone walk by going east at 1km/hr. From your frame of reference what is the person’s velocity (speed) and direction of travel? -1km/hr east  1km/hr

12 As you walk south down a trail at 2km/hr, you see someone sitting on a bench. From their frame of reference what is your velocity and direction of travel? - 2 km/hr south

13 4. You are sitting in the passenger seat of your parent’s car driving to Calgary (north) at 100km/hr. a) You look at the driver of the car. What is their velocity and direction from your frame of reference? - 0km/hr b) You look at the floor of the car. What is the velocity of the car floor and direction of travel from your frame of reference? - 0km/hr c) You look outside the car at the ground. What is the velocity and direction of travel of the ground from your frame of reference? -100km/hr south (Because the ground look like it is traveling under you) d) You look up ahead and you see a sign. What is the velocity and direction of travel of the sign from your frame of reference? -100km/hr south (Because it looks like the sign is coming towards you) e) What is the velocity and direction of travel of the sign from the frame of reference of the ground below it? -0km/hr (Because if you sit below the sign (the grounds point of view) is the sign moving? - No

14 5. Two people are running towards each other
5. Two people are running towards each other. Person D is running east at 5km/hr and person K is running west at 1km/hr. a) From person K’s frame of reference what is the velocity and direction of travel of person D? -person D is traveling 6km/hr east (because the two are going to meet each other quicker with both running so you add and of course D is running east) b) From person D’s frame of reference what is the velocity and direction of travel of person K? -person K is traveling 6km/hr west (because the two are going to meet each other quicker with both running so you add and of course K is running west) c) Person K sees a person sitting on a bench. From K’s frame of reference what is the velocity and direction of travel of the person sitting on the bench? -1km/hr east (Because it looks like the person on the bench is moving towards you). d) What is the velocity and direction of travel of the person sitting on the bench to the bench’s frame of reference? -Okm/hr (Because the person is not moving and neither is the bench
