9 Types of Courseware “Different strokes for different folks”
Visual – “hands on” type of person; Need pictures, graphs, etc. to learn and apply material Non-Visual - can apply learned material from just reading it Different learning techniques can be used for different people. This is one of the advantages of computer based training. It can be customizable.

10 Types of Courseware On CD-ROMs – visual and customizable
Books and Text – non-visual and very standardized On the internet – visual and accessible There many different types of computer based training ranging from the internet, to text, to software on CD-ROMs. This allows companies many different options to computer training.

11 Courseware Design What makes a good courseware design?
3 Principles in courseware design (according to PPI) Sound Instructional Plan - gives targets, learning objectives and goals Adults learn best by doing - Define, Show, Do, Review Customization - Learning experience is set up for the individual so there is maximum retention of the information to be learned PPI – Productivity Point International Define- gives a readable summary of the information being taught Show- gives a visual aid of what is being taught Do- Allows the user to participate Review- tests the user of skills just taught

12 Making a courseware program
There are several professions that collaborate to make a good courseware program. All play a major role in the training program design. This collaboration among professions was taken from Classrooms and Courseware by Larry Stevens.

13 Making a courseware program
Good Design Personnel Make features easy to use; computer friendly design Expertise Personnel Understands the information perfectly and makes sure everything is correctly stated; helps create the lesson to be taught Computer Programming Personnel Combines the information and easy features into a computer based program The design personnel create a good design structure that it easily understood by the user. The Expertise Personnel focuses on teaching the material. They are the experts on the information being taught. Lastly, the programmer combines the lesson and the user friendly design together to create the computer training program.

14 Real World How does a company implement a courseware program?
Ex: A manufacturing company wants to increase it’s productivity. They decide to purchase some state of the art equipment. This equipment is expected to double the output production of the company. Problem  The employees to do not understand exactly how the new system works

16 Real World Begin the Training Process Who and What?
- Who needs to be trained? - What do your employees already know? A company beginning the training process must find out exactly what their employees already know. This will allow them to efficiently teach their employees the right material without redundancy of information.

17 Real World “You have to make sure you don’t train the right people in the wrong areas and the wrong people in the right areas!” ~ Gloria Sumka (Product marketing manager of training at Allen-Bradley)

18 Real World Gather data about your employee knowledge
Design a suitable learning program for the right people in the right areas Depending on the size of the business, this could mean hiring an organization that specializes in courseware design Lastly, Implement your training program

19 Real World The Before and After Before
Employees are not fully capable to meet the demands of their job New system causes confusion Employees become bored The reason a company implements a training program is because their employees need to refine certain skills. Employees are more knowledgeable Knowledge brings a freshness to the workplace Employees are excited to to back and apply their knowledge to their jobs Employees feel they have more power because they have the knowledge to make more decisions Productivity Employees know more, ask less questions Understand new system  runs more efficient Employees feel good about themselves. Happy employees lead to higher production and efficiency rates.

Go to the start menu and select HELP Next, under the index, type in Creating shortcuts and then select: on the desktop This is an exercise to give you an example of what courseware is like. Follow the steps given in the window’s help menu. This will teach you how to make a shortcut. It first defines the steps to creating a shortcut to you in words and then allows you to try it on your own.

22 Courseware Exercise Follow These steps Type Subject here
This is what the windows help menu looks like!
