Enjoy relating with people, attain sense of self from activities, work to maintain order May be short-sided, look at daily operations Leaders Loners, risk takers and visionaries Charismatic, inspiring, flexible Inspire others to accept change Aware of followers needs

3 Transactional Leadership
Views leader-follower relationship as a process of exchange Task accomplishment Problem solving Steadier, less turbulent manner of working with others Complement transformational leader

4 Transformational Leadership
“Recognizes and exploits the existing need or demand of a potential follower….looks for potential motives in followers, seeks to satisfy higher needs, and engages the full person of the follower.” Converts followers into leaders and leaders into moral agents

5 Cont. Visionary Accurately assess and provide a mission and goals to respond to follower’s needs Never leave matters as they find them Change is the rule, not the exception Less concerned with how to achieve an end than the purpose of the mission

6 Empowering processes Each of the following is approached differently by leaders vs. managers: Providing Direction Stimulating followers and Subordinates Rewarding Followers and Subordinates Developing Followers and Subordinates Appealing to Followers and Subordinate Needs

7 Need both! People can grow and develop with either one or both
Leaders need managers to help reach goals Managers need leaders to help articulate goal and direction The key is flexibility – some situations will require one over the other
