Innovative Teaching & Learning Team

2 Outcomes I can: explain the BCPS Makes philosophy and how it supports teaching and learning. identify programmatic supports for maker learning in my building. identify one potential tool that could support instruction in my classroom.

3 What is Maker Learning? Maker Learning is:
the process of learners determining a purpose for their project, researching, prototyping, testing, completing multiple iterations, and launching their creations to an authentic audience. the opportunity to apply sciences, technologies, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) as well as the language arts all while learning and applying 21st Century and technical skills to create something new. The concept of making is a basic one. It is literally the process of making or producing something. When we talk about making in the realm of education, it is still about creating something, but its purpose is to allow for students to have hands-on, experiential learning experiences that are authentic. In addition, the processes involved in making allow for creativity and are a great way to incorporate Universal Design for Learning within the learning experience while addressing P21 (core content, media/information/technology skills, life/career skills, learning/innovation skills).

4 VISION BCPS Makes creates opportunities for all stakeholders to develop and apply their passions and 21st Century skills in authentic design experiences focused on growing the whole child in a global society.  MISSION To sparks students’ curiosities and passions through access to hands on, student-driven design opportunities in which they are encouraged to collaborate, fail forward, problem solve, and iterate.

5 Making is about the process.

6 Examples of Maker Activities
Making can be technologically advanced or as simple as building with cardboard. The final product can be physical, digital, or a combination of both.

7 Teaching and Learning Framework review
What does it mean to be globally competitive? This certainly includes achieving mastery in core content standards, but it also means being able to effectively participate in our increasingly global society. Inner ring is what we expect from our curriculum/instruction in order to prepare our students. Middle ring is the Danielson Framework – what we do, as teachers, to prepare the learning experience. Outer ring is the P21 Framework for 21st Century Learning Switch slide

8 Critical thinking Communication Collaboration Creativity
ELA World Languages Art Mathematics Economics Science Geography History Government/Civics Information Literacy Media Literacy Technology Literacy Flexibility/Adaptability Initiative/Self Direction Social/Cross Cultural Productive/Accountable Leadership/Responsibility Core knowledge is just one focus area within P21. P21 is focused on growing the whole child in a global society BCPS Makes allows for instruction to explicitly teach and meaningfully embed all four areas of P21.

9 Opportunities for Integrating Maker Learning
Mathematics – (CCSS) Standards for Mathematical Practice ELA – (CCSS) Speaking & Listening Skills, Writing Social Studies – (C3 Standards) Evaluating Sources and Using Evidence, Communicating Conclusions and Taking Informed Action Science – (NGSS) Engineering Design Process
