4 An Introduction to Twelfth Night
Twelfth Night can be confusing to read Viola and Cesario are the same person (she is in disguise) Let’s go through each character and the play in greater detail to help you understand it As we go through the slides create a mind map of the relationships between characters

5 Exemplar Mind Map (The Chrysalids)
Take out a piece of paper and writing utensils Use symbols, shapes, arrows and different colours to help you organize your ideas

6 Shakespearean Insults Activity
You will create an insult in Shakespeare’s words similar to that of a modern day “your Momma joke” Click image to access link One side is a cheat sheet for you The other side is our activity

7 Insults Activity Instructions
Choose a word from each column and write them down in order Put “Thou art a(n)” in front of the words you choose Deliver your insult with gusto to your elbow partner Try to figure out what it means together Infer based on context and what the words sound like Try another one!

8 Prose vs. Poetry Shakespeare often writes poetically
He includes a lot of figurative language in his plays to add meaning The structure of many of the lines is in a poetic form called Iambic Pentameter

9 Prose It has sentences arranged in paragraphs
The information presented is more pragmatic, than in poetry Sentences of prose follow each other, one after the other The first word of each sentence is capitalized Punctuation for both prose and poetry is the same The first line of each paragraph is indented The language of prose is straightforward, with less figurative language than poetry

10 Poetry The appearance of poetry on the page or computer screen is different, unique than that of prose Poetry has stanzas Poetry divides into shorter lines, with a phrase or group of words that join together on each line In traditional poetry, the first word of each line is capitalized Some poetry has only the first word of each sentence capitalized Indenting of lines depends on where the writer desires to have indenting Poetry is created with figurative language, such as poetic devices

11 Iambic Pentameter Iambic pentameter is a series of 5 soft
(‐) and hard (/) syllabic stresses per line: A “foot” consists of one stressed syllable and unstressed syllable There are 5 feet in one metre of Iambic Pentameter This rhythm follows the same beat as the human heart ‐ / ‐ / ‐ / ‐ / ‐ / for easier recall of the lines Actor’s in Shakespeare’s theatre had to memorize lines very quickly, this poetic form helped them do that

12 Try It Out! Say this line very slowly; stressing (louder, more emphasis) the second in the pair of syllables (in bold and underlined) Let’s try it together (collaboration points) Shall I com-pare thee to a sum-mer’s day? To be or not to be, that is the question. If music be the food of love, play on;
