Shakespeare’s uses iambic pentameter to contrast the rank/status/birth of his characters and to add emphasis: –“Upperclass” characters speak in iambic pentameter –“Lower-born” characters speak in prose –Sometimes breaks the rhythmic pattern in a line to add contrast or emphasis
