1 By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
Describe all the common treatments used for sports injuries

2 Describe what the acronym’s PRICED and SALTAPS mean and how they relate to sport.
Describe the three electrotherapy methods used stating what they are and the types of injuries they are used for. PRICED SALTAPS Electrotherapy Manual Therapy Taping Bandaging Splints Heat Packs Tubigrip Limb supports Medical referral Pain Sprays Anti – inflammatories Antibiotics Ice cube massage Hot/cold treatments Heat Lamps

3 Manual therapy is a progressive hands on form of healing
It uses gentle manipulations that put joints and tissues through direct and indirect ranges of motion Manual therapists move your body to create change in several areas, from the muscles of the back and limbs to overall posture.

4 Manual therapy treats:
Athletic injuries Joint or limb problems Low back pain Migraine headaches Post-traumatic stress Tendonitis

5 Why do sports physiotherapists use manual therapy techniques?
In groups of 3 discuss and make a list of bullet points

6 Manual techniques are used to:
mobilize stiff joints stretch tight muscles Improved ROM Restore physiological alignment relieve pain and ligament stress conserve energy

7

8 Benefits-Physical Level
Deep relaxation and stress reduction Relief of muscle tension and stiffness Reduced muscle spasm and tension Relief from entrapment of nerves in muscle Promoted deeper and easier breathing Better circulation of both blood and lymph fluids Relief of tension-related or eye-strain headaches Healthier, better nourished skin Improved posture

9 Benefits - Mental Level
Relaxed state of alertness Reduced mental stress Greater ability to monitor stress signals and respond appropriately Increased capability for clearer thinking

10 Benefits - Emotional Level
Feeling of well-being Reduced levels of anxiety Increased awareness of mind- body connection Enhanced self image

11 Benefits of massage BREAKS DOWN SCAR TISSUE AND ADHESIONS
Massage will break down or stretch inflexible scar tissue found in muscles, tendons or ligaments. These may be the result of past injuries or over use. Adhesions can bind tissues together restricting movement. Massage can remove these adhesions. Massage around joints will improve the circulation and generate warmth. This will improve the joint condition and maintain the flexibility of joint structures.

12 Discuss and write down reasons for not using the range of treatments talked about.
E.g Sports massage would not be administered over an open wound.

13 Write down the types of sports injuries that would require medical referral form specialist help.
