6 Can Do Philosophy Walk and Talk- highlight what resonates with you. Once you finish, stand quietly and look for someone else to walk and talk with. Come back after your talk! Think about how are you seeing this actualized in our community? What do we need to put into action? WIDA’s Can Do Philosophy is based on the belief that all students bring to their learning cultural and linguistic practices, skills, and ways of knowing from their homes and communities. WIDA believes that as educators, our role is to craft instruction that capitalizes on and builds upon these assets.

8 Guiding Principles Students’ languages and cultures are valuable resources to be tapped and incorporated into schooling. Students’ home, school, and community experiences influence their language development. Students draw on their metacognitive, metalinguistic, and metacultural awareness to develop proficiency in additional languages. Students' academic language development in their native language facilitates their academic language development in English. Conversely, students' academic language development in English informs their academic language development in their native language. Students learn language and culture through meaningful use and interaction. Book mark each guiding principles. Read your principle. What resonates with you? What surprises you? Exchange ideas as you exchange book marks. Exchange with 2-3 people. Debrief >> What do educators need to know? Why are the principles important? (For participants) Which principles are realized in our community? Which are not? Why? WIDA drafted its Guiding Principles from a synthesis of literature and research related to language development and effective instructional practices for language learners. They represent WIDA’s core beliefs about language development.

9 Guiding Principles Continued
Students use language in functional and communicative ways that vary according to context. Students develop language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing interdependently, but at different rates and in different ways. Students’ development of academic language and academic content knowledge are inter-related processes. Students' development of social, instructional, and academic language, a complex and long-term process, is the foundation for their success in school. Students’ access to instructional tasks requiring complex thinking is enhanced when linguistic complexity and instructional support match their levels of language proficiency. Book mark each guiding principles. Read your principle. What resonates with you? What surprises you? Exchange ideas as you exchange book marks. Exchange with 2-3 people.
