1 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model Students will spend their adult lives in a multitasking, multifaceted, technology driven, diverse, vibrant world. We must commit to ensuring that all students have equal access to this new technological world. – Learning for the 21 st Century, The Partnership for the 21 st Century Skills.

2 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) Agenda Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model I.Educational Benefit II.Problem III.Objective IV.Assumptions V.Conceptual Model VI.Timeline

3 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) For teachers/students, technology in the classroom… Enables a variety of modes to deliver information and content Differentiates instruction to student learning styles Facilitates administrative tasks to allow for more time focused on teaching & learning Increases Access –Information (Content & Data) –People –Instructional Materials & Resources –Tools Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model Educational Benefits

4 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) Problem BPS Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model The demand for technology in schools does not meet the current supply of hardware resources Aging hardware crisis: 55% of ~15,000 fleet are 95s, 98s, or old Macs No clear expectation regarding ownership & procurement of assets What computers are where? Difficult to understand the scope of the problem

5 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) Objective BPS Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model Maintain and support the Mayors 4:1 student-to- computer initiative Create a model that supports the districts current investment in technology. Equal access to technology for teachers and students Create a sustainable computer life cycle model Create a clear statement of central office responsibility for technology, in partnership with the schools

6 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) Assumptions BPS Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model Hardware Assumptions Current # of ~15,000 is the right number of instructional computers Proposed model provides a foundation for every school to impact student learning: Every teacher/classroom (laptop) Principal/Headmaster (laptop) School secretary (desktop) Lab (desktop) Library (desktop) Laptops on a 4-year lifecycle, Desktops on a 5-year cycle Funding Assumptions Microsoft reimbursement funding will be used for FY 08 & FY 09 OIIT hardware budget will move from Capital ($0 FY 07) to GSP in FY 10 Costs for hardware/services in model are based on current pricing/contract

7 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) Conceptual Model: Key Components BPS Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model Lease computers –Competitive RFP with bundled services –Lower up-front cost –Maintenance agreements & warranty with vendors Implement in phases Phase I: Project Refresh Update all 95s and 98s in computer labs and libraries Ongoing supplementation of the remaining ~1/3 of computer fleet Phase II: Laptops for Learning Deploy ~1/3 of computer fleet as classroom laptops for instructional use Phase III: Labs & Libraries Build in ~1/3 of computer fleet incrementally over 5 years

9 OFFICE OF INSTRUCTIONAL & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (OIIT) BPS Computer Life Cycle/Sustainability Model Planning for a Plan … Laptops for Learning Mac vs. PC? How does wireless fit into the model? What type of training is needed? What difference will this make? How do we ensure that laptops dont walk away? How do we distribute? Do they get to bring them home? Request for Proposal (RFP) Communication Plan Implementation/Rollout Plan Training & Support Plan Evaluation Plan ~15,000 is right number Take out what we put in Security cable & low-jack basic software included 4 Yr. Lifecycle for Laptops Guiding AssumptionsKey Questions (a few…)Decision Documents
