1 Homework: HP #12, answer reading questions Biotech Quest on Friday
Explain the differences between prokaryotic reproduction and eukaryotic reproduction. (answer on separate sheet) Homework: HP #12, answer reading questions Biotech Quest on Friday

2 Recombinant DNA Recombinant DNA is a technique that allows scientists to take a gene of interest and combine it into another organism This organism is called a transgenic organism and may be a bacterium, plant, or animal

3 Recombinant DNA steps 1. The gene of interest is removed from an organism 2. That gene is inserted in a bacterial plasmid 3. Scientists pick the bacteria cells that successfully incorporated that new gene 4. Those bacteria cells make the new product by going through transcription and translation

4 Uses of Recombinant DNA
Production of human insulin for diabetes treatment Place ‘glowing’ genes into an organism to see where those genes are activated Create plants that are resistant to pesticides Create plants without seeds Create salmon that mature faster

5 Human Insulin Production

6 Coloring and Label Color legend: Human donor cell: red
Insulin gene of interest: blue Bacterial cell: yellow Bacterial plasmid: pink Recombinant Plasmid: orange Transformed bacterial cell: grey Insulin product: green

7 Genetically Modified Organisms
Recombinant DNA can be used in plants and agriculture to create transgenic organisms, also known as genetically modified organisms There is a lot of talk about the safety of genetically modified organisms Are they safe to eat? Is it ethical? Should labels be required?

8 Common Genetically Modified Foods

9 Question Are genetically modified foods safe to eat? Are they ethical to the organisms? Directions: In your groups, you will read 3 sources provided by me. You will then find an additional, 4th source. Using the information from the source you will fill out your claim outline. Use the links and document posted on mspoolebiology.com under ‘Honors Biology’

10 Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
Your claim will be what your group feels about genetically modified foods Are they safe? Should labels be required? Should they be illegal? It SHOULD be a more complex claim than just pro or con Your evidence should be taken from the four sources and written in your OWN words Your reasoning should be a 2-3 sentence explanation of HOW your evidence SUPPORTS your claim
