Which of the skills listed on the feedback did you feel you had before the role play ? Did you use any of those skills prior to actually take part in the role play ?

5 JOHARI Window

6 Task

7 Johari Window The strategy for the Johari Window is to enable you as an individual to gain more knowledge in how you view yourself as an individual but also how you reveal a lot more than you think to other people through : Speech, Body language, Opinions, Attitudes, Approach.

8 Have you ? Ever been told that you were good at something which you might not necessarily recognise? How did they recognise this in you ?

9 Johari Window what is it ?
The Johari window is a model which is used in order to get and give feedback whether it may be in the personal or professional area. Things I know about myself Things I don’t know about myself Things others know about me Open Arena Blind Spot Things others don’t know about me Hidden Area Unknown Area

10 Point 1 - Things I know about myself and things that others also know ….
This includes things such as race, name, height, age etc. Those are the characteristic which identify you which you have shared with people when you have introduced yourself when you started college, or when you started at work or even on placement. This information essentially is the information which you want people to know about and which open for everyone to know. What sort of information about yourself would you share when in a helping relationship and why ?

11 Point 2 - Things that I know about myself but others don’t know about me…
The hidden area contains information that we don’t want others to know about us. It is the closet where one hides their deepest feelings, insecurities and negative experiences. What information might you choose to withhold from a client with whom you might be having a helping relationship under the following subheading: A prisoner who is self harming, A woman who is being abused (physically, sexually and emotionally), A young man struggling with anorexia, A man with a history of offences against children.

12 Point 3 – things I don’t know about myself but that others know about me
The blind spot is the information that others know about you but that you don’t know about yourself. Theses things can be either positive or negative depending on which way you interpret it. Snoring, Talking in your sleep, Selfishness, Self centred, Attention seeking, A good listener, A good motivator.

13 Point 4 – the things I don’t know about myself and that others don’t know about me …
The unknown area contains information that you don’t know and that others don’t know either. This could be things such as your potential, abilities that are yet to be discovered. This could be applicable to both your personal life – ability to be a good problem solver and also to your professional life – having great selling skills.

14 So what now …… Now that you have identified and gathered information in all the boxes it is time for you to put it all together. This is essentially about merging arena together such as The Open Arena and The Hidden Arena. As time goes on you will learn to trust the other professional as well as the clients whom you will be working with and open up a lot more.

15 So in a nutshell … What conclusion can you make from the information which you gathered about yourself some which you knew , some which you didn’t ? What is the meaning of all this information to you ? Why is this information important ? How can you use this information in order to develop your counselling skills ?

16 M2 Tips In order to achieve M2, you will need using the Johari Window to assess how your development of counselling skills has affected your self development. You will need to produce a completed JOHARI window diagram which will need to be completed fully, You will need to identify and assess how using counselling skills has affected/could affect your self development Think about some of the skills which were identified during your role play and times at which you have had to develop or build a helping relationship in your work/placement/ college life. Has using some of those skills affected your self development think your awareness of body language, your ability to be empathetic? How has your own understanding and self awareness of who you are affected your development when entering into a helping relationship?

17 D1 Tips In order to achieve D1, you will need to analyse the strategies which are used in health and social care settings in order to create a develop a helping relationship. You will need to pick 2/3 aspects under each of the subheadings listed under section 1 and to identify a strength and weakness of using it as a strategies making references to the key studies uploaded on the blog under lesson 3. Sentence stems could be as follow : one strength of using (concept) as a strategy is that ………………. This can be explained in context when looking at (case study) as ….. one weakness of using (concept) as a strategy is that ………………. This can be explained in context when looking at (case study) as …..
