2 Warm Up Solve each problem. Show all work.
1). Jon’s bedroom is 12 meters in width. On a scale drawing his bedroom is 1.5 cm. What is the scale of the drawing? 2). Stowe wants to make a drawing of his car using the scale 1 inch = 3 feet. If his car is 12 feet long, how long will it be on his drawing? 3). Kim looks at a map and discovers that the distance from her house to the mall is 5 miles. If the scale used for the map is 1/2 inch = 2 miles, what is the distance on the map? 1 cm = 8 meters 4 inches 1.25 or 1 ¼ inch

4 Example: 2 inches = 16 inches The scale factor is 2/16 or 1/8.
The ratio of a length on a scale drawing or model to the corresponding length on the real object is called the scale factor. Scale factor is the number you multiply by to either increase or decrease the size of a figure. Example: 2 inches = 16 inches The scale factor is 2/16 or 1/8. You put it in the same unit to get the scale factor.

5 What is the scale factor?
Example 1: A scale drawing of a garden has a flower bed that is 6.5 inches in length. The scale that was used for the drawing is 1 inch = 2 feet. What is the scale factor? This means that the drawing is 1/24 the size of the real garden. The garden is 24 times the scale drawing of the garden.

6 The car is 150 times the size of the scale drawing.
Example 2: What is the scale factor of a drawing of a car, that has a scale of 2 cm = 3 m? How much larger is the car than the drawing? The car is 150 times the size of the scale drawing.
