1 IMMUNE SYSTEM II SPECIFIC RESPONSE
PP

2 RECOGNIZING PATHOGENS
Wbc have receptors to the antigens (pieces of a pathogen) that cause an immune response

3

4 INITIAL RESPONSE Macrophage engulfs pathogen and puts antigens on its surface Helper T-cell binds to antigens Macrophage releases a chemical (INK-1) which causes the Helper T-cell to release INK-2

5 Initial response INK-2 INK-2 Cell-mediated T-Cell production Humoral B-Cell production

6

7 CELL MEDIATED GOAL: Attacks infected cells to prevent further infection by shutting down the “factory” T-cell production Cytotoxic: initiates cell death in infected cells Suppressor: helps to stop T-cell production

8 Initial response INK-2 INK-2 Cell-mediated T-Cell production Humoral B-Cell production

9

10 HUMORAL GOAL: Attack viruses in the blood so they cannot infect other cells B-cell production B-cells change to plasma cells plasma cells produce and secrete antibodies that attack and clump viruses Clumped viruses cannot infect new cells Macrophages digest the clump

11 PRIMARY AND SECONDARY IMMUNE RESPONSE
Primary: 1st time body encounters pathogens Secondary: 2nd time body encounters pathogen with memory cells (leftover B-cells and T-cells)
