Multiple Intelligences

Introduction Howard Gardner, a psychology professor at Harvard University, developed the approach that rather than one type of intelligence (IQ), there are at least 7 different types of intelligence. For most people one or more types of intelligence are the strongest and most developed indicating learning preferences.

Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence
People who are verbally/linguistically intelligent may Easily remember quotes, phrases, and poems Easily find grammatical/spelling errors in other people’s work Like to hear and tell stories

Musical/Rhythmic People who are musically/rhythmically intelligent may
Be able to sing on key Enjoy various types of music Appreciate various sounds

Logical/Mathematical
People who are logically/mathematically intelligent may Be interested in science and mathematics Read science journals or articles Enjoy organizing according to patterns and categories

Visual/Spatial People who are visually/spatially intelligent may
Have an “innate” sense of direction Remember details of landmarks or layouts Like to draw

Bodily/Kinesthetic People who are bodily/kinesthetically intelligent may Be considered graceful and/or dance well Be able to fix things without help Be able to figure out how things work without help

Intra-personal People who are intra-personally intelligent may
Easily understand other people and can see themselves in their shoes Easily interpret peoples actions/feelings Have a sense of their own abilities and “inner-self”

Interpersonal People who are interpersonally intelligent may
Easily sense when others are troubled Correlate characteristics of various people Easily understand others

Summary Understanding what type of intelligence(s) may exist, enables individuals to understand learning preferences and abilities, as well as allows for development/enhancement of those intelligences.
