Methods of Reproduction

Asexual Reproduction Asexual reproduction is reproduction in which a single parent has offspring that are genetically identical to the parent. Examples of asexual reproduction: binary fission, budding, fragmentation, regeneration, spore formation, vegetative reproduction and parthenogenesis

Binary Fission Binary Fission: the parent organism splits into two organisms Examples: Bacteria, Amoeba, Euglena

Budding Budding: when a part of the part organism pinches off and forms a new organism The new organism separates from the parent and lives independently. Examples: Hydra, Sponges

Fragmentation Fragmentation: A part of an organism splits off from the organism and it develops into a new organism Examples: Flatworms, Sea Anemones

Regeneration Regeneration: If a piece of a parent is detached, it can grow and develop into a completely new individual. Examples: Echinoderms

Spore Formation Spore Formation: Parent releases small cells called spores. Spores grow into offspring that are identical to the parent. Examples: Bacteria, Fungi

Vegetative Reproduction
Vegetative reproduction: regeneration of new plants from the vegetative parts of the parent plant Examples: Sweet potatoes, Potatoes, Strawberries

Parthenogenesis Parthenogenesis: a form of asexual reproduction where growth and development of embryos occurs without fertilization Examples: Fish, Bees

Sexual Reproduction Sexual reproduction: reproduction in which sex cells from two parents unite to produce offspring that share traits from both parents Examples: Pollination, Internal Fertilization, External Fertilization

Pollination Pollination: The act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma which enables fertilization and reproduction Examples: Flowering Plants

Internal Fertilization
Internal Fertilization: Fertilization that takes place inside the female reproductive system Examples: Mammals, Reptiles, Birds

External Fertilization
External Fertilization: Fertilization that takes place in the external environment Examples: Fish, Amphibians
