1 Henry VII Sorts out the Country 1485- 1509
Henry VII wanted to end the war between his family and the family of Richard III. He married Richard’s niece, Elizabeth of York. Henry saved lots of money by raising taxes. He also banned anyone else from having their own soldiers in England. Henry VII marries off his son and loses him in 1502. Henry VII wanted to make sure that his family kept the throne after he died. He found a wife for his eldest son, Arthur. She was Catherine of Aragon, the daughter of the King of Aragon in Spain, a powerful man. But, Arthur died in 1502. Mary I gets “bloody!” Many people didn’t like the religion of the Pope that Mary wanted to bring back. These people were called “protestants”. Mary had hundreds of these protestants burned at the stake because they disagreed with her. Elizabeth I comes to the throne 1558 Elizabeth was the last daughter of Henry VIII. She was a protestant and reversed many changes made by Mary I. This made the Spanish very angry and they Henry VIII comes to the throne Henry VII died in His second son, Henry VIII had a lot to live up to. He started by spending lots of money on having parties and fighting wars in France He also married Catherine of Aragon (remember that name?) when he became king. Mary I gets pregnant, or not, and dies – 1558 Mary wanted a son to carry on after her (partly so that the country wouldn’t be protestant). She got very fat and thought she was pregnant. It turned out that she was ill and instead of having a baby she died. Henry has “women trouble” Henry wanted a son to follow him. He divorced Catherine, because his girlfriend was pregnant. Henry hoped it was a boy. The divorce upset the head of the Church – the Pope, and it all got very messy! The baby was a girl. Henry’s third wife gave him a boy in 1536. Elizabeth beats the Spanish Armada tried to invade England by sending a huge fleet of ships – over 130 of them! The English navy used some clever tactics to beat the Spanish. Elizabeth ruled for a long time, and didn’t die until 1603. Henry VII Comes to the throne – 1485 Henry becomes king when beats the army of King Richard the III at the Battle of Bosworth. Richard and Henry’s family have been fighting a war since over who should be king. Henry VIII dies 1547. Very fat, and his legs covered in ulcers, Henry died and his son became King Edward VI. Edward was too young to rule on his own, as he was only 9. His Uncle, Edward Seymour and a “Council” ruled the kingdom for him. Mary I comes to the Throne. 1553 Mary was Henry’s daughter with Catherine of Aragon – the Spanish one! She wanted to become friends with the Pope again and married Philip, the King of Spain. This didn’t make her very popular. Edward VI comes of age and dies! Edward became old enough to rule on his own in when he became 16. Unfortunately he got ill very soon afterwards and then died at the age of 18.
