Words that say one thing but mean another are called figurative language. Writers use figurative language to create colorful pictures in the readers’ minds. Example: The animals were all ears as they listened to Coyote.

2 Interpret Figurative Language With your team, rewrite each figurative statement below as a sentence that says exactly what it means. The rain came down in buckets. Keep your shirt on. Don’t spill the beans! I smell a rat. Try walking a mile in my shoes.
