How does the number of books you read impact how quickly you can complete a word search? By Zoe Livermore and Dione Wong

Aim and Hypothesis Aim - The aim of the experiment is to find out if the number of books a female year 7 student (aged ) reads impacts the speed in which they can complete a word search. Hypothesis - It is predicted that the more books on average that are read a week, the quicker you will be able to complete a word search.

Method Twelve girls aged years old were asked how many books they read per week. They were then given a word search with fifteen 7-letter words to complete and their time was recorded. The same twelve girls were handed two more word searches to finish so an average time could be recorded. To the right is an image of one of the word searches given.

Discussion The results gathered show that the more books someone reads, the faster they can complete a word search. It also showed that reading at least one book a week has a smaller difference in word search completion time from reading another book. For example, those who read no books a week were, on average, six minutes slower than people who read one book a week, who were on average only about two and a half minutes behind compared to the people who read two books. It can be concluded that the more books someone reads on average, the quicker they would be at completing a word search.

Conclusion The hypothesis was indeed proven correct; it was concluded that the more books read a week, the less time it would take to complete a word search. To improve the method for next time, more people who read over three books on average could be tested so that the impact of results from reading four or five books a week could be seen.
